World of Warcraft’s Gamepad Support Is Great — But Blizzard Won’t Bring It to Consoles

September 23, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

At BlizzCon, the developers behind World of Warcraft: Forever — Blizzard’s remixed and updated take on the classic MMO — clarified to Polygon that although the title finally ships with official gamepad support, that does not mean the game is coming to PlayStation 5 or Xbox. The statement arrives as a puzzle to many observers: if the controller experience is genuinely playable, why would Blizzard not seize the chance to introduce one of gaming’s most enduring franchises to a brand-new audience? The answer, according to the interview, lies in the fundamental architecture of the game itself.

After spending time with the Forever beta on a controller, the Polygon reporter concluded that the support is not broken — it is simply not native. “It’s not that the gamepad support is bad — it’s actually very good. It’s a totally viable way to play the game. But you would never mistake it for a game that was meant to be played this way,” they explained. The distinction matters enormously, because a console release would require Blizzard to stake its name on the controller as the primary, if not only, input method — something the developer is not prepared to do.

A Two-Decade Purist Weighs In

The journalist’s perspective carries particular weight given their history with the franchise. “I have been playing for 21 years and counting, and the mouse-and-keyboard controls are hardwired into my muscle memory,” they said. “I can’t even deal with switching away from the old-school WASD map — where A and D turn your character, rather than strafe — to the modern setup.” That comfort is not incidental; it is the product of thousands of hours spent clicking and binding.

Still, the reporter acknowledged a genuine appeal in the console experience: “Well, because I’d like to be able to sit on my sofa with my cat and talk to my wife while I’m playing.” Community-made controller mods have existed for years, but the author described themselves as “allergic to that kind of tinkering,” and a purist about playing games as their creators intended. That curiosity ultimately drove them to test Forever’s official support.

Blizzard Solved the Hard Parts

Bringing a deeply keyboard-centric MMO to a controller required Blizzard to solve several problems, the most obvious being the sheer number of skills and items a player must access on the fly. With mouse and keyboard, this is handled through onscreen grids of icons and a dense web of keybinds. The controller solution turns out to be the elegant one: skills are mapped to the d-pad and face buttons, with alternate sets unlocked by holding the left trigger, right trigger, or both simultaneously. This yields 32 skills or consumables out of the box, fully customizable to the player’s preference.

“That’s enough for the vast majority of situations, and it soon becomes second nature. It’s swift, too — just as swift as mouse and keys, arguably more so,” the reporter noted. Targeting works smoothly as well, with bumpers cycling through friendly and enemy targets, and combat overall described as slick. Character and camera movement felt second nature, leading to the conclusion that controller players would not be at a disadvantage even in high-pressure scenarios like battlegrounds or raiding.

The UI Is the Real Obstacle

The deeper problem, the reporter argued, is World of Warcraft’s entire user interface — “entwined at the deepest level with the entirety of its game design.” It is “a game of windows,” and gamepads are simply ill-suited to manipulating a point-and-click interface. Blizzard has done a credible job making navigation workable: the options button raises a selector wheel for windows and sub-menus such as the map, quest log, character sheet, bag, spellbook, and crafting, all reachable with a flick of the right stick. Crucially, the game’s reliance on multiple simultaneously open windows is handled by switching focus with the triggers and selecting tabs with the bumpers.

However, the reporter was candid about the compromises. “It is completely functional. But it is also fussy and inelegant. It is very obviously a fix — a good fix, but a fix all the same — for a game that was not built to be operated in this way and couldn’t really be optimized for it without a complete redesign.” They admitted stumbling a few times, including failing to figure out how to make the map full-screen, though they rarely became truly stuck.

The comparison to Final Fantasy XIV, which was built from the ground up with console in mind, underscored the point. “It’s clear that one of these games was designed from the ground up with a console version in mind, and one wasn’t.” Gamepad support remains in alpha, and Blizzard undoubtedly has further refinements ahead — but the reporter did not believe it will ever reach the polish required to serve as a console’s primary interface.

Looking Ahead

Ultimately, the reporter expressed genuine appreciation for Blizzard’s effort, calling the support “equal to or better than the best community mods” and a “fantastic accessibility tool.” They intend to use it from time to time, even as the comfort of their mouse-and-keyboard setup calls to them. “Gamepad support is still in alpha, and doubtless Blizzard has many improvements left to make,” they conceded. “But I don’t think it will ever be a comfortable enough fit — which, after all, makes sense. If a console version of WoW had ever been truly feasible, we would have been playing it years ago.”

For now, Forever’s controller support stands as a welcome option rather than a platform roadmap. It broadens accessibility and offers a legitimate way to enjoy the MMO from a couch, but it is not a signal that Blizzard is quietly preparing a console launch. The developer’s message is clear: the game works on a controller, but it was never built for one — and that distinction is exactly why World of Warcraft remains a PC-exclusive experience.
