Director Zack Snyder has revealed the first concrete plot details for his long-gestating Escape from New York remake, confirming the film will be set in 1997 and viewed through the lens of 1981, while cryptically hinting that he may already have the perfect actor lined up to reprise the iconic Snake Plissken role. The announcements emerged during a conversation with Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Snyder is currently showcasing his new film The Last Photograph.
According to Snyder, the remake’s central conflict — the war between the United States police force and criminal elements — takes place on July 9th, 1981, a deliberate nod to the original film’s release date. “The approach is… the movie’s going to be set in ’97… from the perspective of 1981,” Snyder explained. “The war between the United States police force and… the criminal elements takes place, I think, July 9th, 1981 – which is the release date of the original movie. And then the rest is pretty much Escape from New York.”
A Deliberate Temporal Shift
The decision to anchor the narrative in 1981 rather than simply reimagining the 1997 setting reflects Snyder’s deep affection for the source material. The original Escape from New York, directed by filmmaking icon John Carpenter — who also co-wrote the script and worked on the score — stars Kurt Russell as Snake, an ex-special forces soldier forced into a 24-hour mission to rescue the President of the United States. Snake must infiltrate Manhattan, which has been converted into a sprawling maximum security prison, and escape before the explosives implanted into his body detonate.
The film was a critical and commercial hit, earning a well-deserved reputation as an influential sci-fi cult classic. A remake has been in development for over two decades, but the project appears to be finally gathering momentum, with StudioCanal indicating it was moving full speed ahead on the project in April this year.
Snake Plissken: The Casting Mystery
When pressed on whether he already had his Snake Plissken, Snyder replied with a single, enigmatic word: “I may.” He declined to elaborate on whether the candidate was an actor he had previously worked with, though he did confirm that Watchmen and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been aggressively pursuing the role.
“He literally has been hitting me up,” Snyder said with a laugh, joking that he doesn’t need to send Morgan an audition tape. “No, he’s the best; I love him.”
As the casting picture sharpens, one name has been firmly removed from the conversation. Wyatt Russell, son of original Snake Plissken Kurt Russell, ruled out the role back in 2021, making it clear he has no interest in repeating his father’s legacy.
“If I really wanted to get people sending me hate mail, I think that’s what I should do,” said the Thunderbolts star. “I will not be ever doing anything like that.”

With Snyder confirmed to write and direct the project — a deal reportedly signed in June — the remake is now transitioning from concept to active production. The studio’s reported acceleration in April suggests the film is well-positioned to move forward, though an official release date has yet to be announced.
