A new PS5 system software update has landed today, and Sony has quietly packed it with more than just stability fixes. Firmware version 26.06-14.00.00 brings enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to the PS5 Pro by default, adds a voice chat speaker indicator, introduces new home screen widgets, and refines regional Bluetooth behavior. The update is available now for PS5 and PS5 Pro owners worldwide, and it arrives just as the console’s busiest gaming season kicks into high gear.
For PS5 Pro owners, the headline change is the automatic activation of enhanced PSSR. Once the system software is updated, the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting flips on by itself, meaning owners no longer have to hunt through menus to enable it. When active, the feature sharpens and smooths visuals across titles, and it even applies to games that support only the previous generation of PSSR. Sony has made the toggle easy to manage: users can disable it via Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality, though the feature remains exclusive to the PS5 Pro.
Who’s Talking, And What’s Trending
Beyond graphics, the update targets the social side of console play. Players can now see who is speaking while a voice chat group is active, a convenience that should prove handy in co-op titles like Big Walk. The option is not enabled by default, but Sony has spelled out the steps clearly: open the voice chat card in the control center, select More > Display Who’s Speaking, and toggle Display Names on. Users can also adjust where the speaker indicator appears on screen by choosing Position.
On the home screen front, Sony has added a Community Activity widget to the Welcome Hub, offering two views. The Trending Now tab surfaces ten multiplayer games or modes that are surging in popularity, including new releases and titles with major content updates, while a second view highlights multiplayer games and popular modes.
Regional Tweaks And A Quiet Performance Boost
The update also touches Bluetooth behavior in specific countries. In affected regions, selecting Turn Off Bluetooth under Settings > Accessories > General > Advanced Settings now prevents the console from entering rest mode and disables HDMI Device Link. Sony has framed this as a purpose-built tool for managing controller connections at esports venues and similar locations, explicitly advising users not to repurpose it for other tasks.
Rounding out the package, Sony states it has improved overall system software performance and stability. The cumulative effect is a noticeably fuller update than recent patches have delivered.
Looking Ahead
This is easily the biggest PS5 firmware update since March, when the PS5 Pro received the enhanced version of PSSR. The timing is deliberate: the enhancements land ahead of a packed slate, with the PS5 exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine already on shelves and other major titles on the horizon, including Control Resonant, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and Grand Theft Auto 6.
For owners who want the sharpest possible visuals out of the box, the automatic PSSR activation means less manual setup and more time playing. Those who prefer to keep their settings untouched can simply reverse the change through the Video Output menu. As the holiday season ramps up, these refinements position the PS5 lineup to handle a wave of high-profile releases without asking users to dig through settings for the features they most want.
