In the ever-expanding landscape of gaming, it’s rare to find a title that truly feels like a breath of fresh air. Entropy, the upcoming post-apocalyptic RPG from developer [Mordheim], promises just that: a unique blend of familiar mechanics and innovative design choices, all wrapped in a low-fi aesthetic that belies its depth.

Entropy is already making waves for its departure from the developer’s previous work. While Dread Delusion was a loving homage to classic first-person RPGs like King’s Field and The Elder Scrolls, Entropy takes a decidedly JRPG-inspired approach, capturing the essence of titles like Final Fantasy 10 or Lost Odyssey. However, it’s not just another JRPG clone. Entropy boasts a large party size for tactical battles, permadeath, locational damage, and a reactivity system that feels more at home on PC than on a PlayStation 5.

In an interview with lead developer James Wragg, he revealed the core inspiration behind Entropy: “In many ways, if Dread Delusion was my take on The Elder Scrolls, then this is my take on Fallout.” This statement immediately sheds light on the game’s DNA. Entropy draws heavily from the original Fallout, a title that Wragg holds in high regard. This influence is evident in the locational damage system, reminiscent of Fallout 1’s called shots (which later evolved into VATS). Players can strategically target specific limbs or zones on enemies, sacrificing accuracy for increased damage or debilitating status effects. Imagine disarming a heavily armed foe or exposing a mutated enemy’s weak point for maximum carnage.

Beyond Fallout, Entropy also draws inspiration from [Mordheim], a small-unit tactics spinoff of Warhammer. Wragg was captivated by the tabletop game’s emphasis on character customization and the freedom it offered players to create unique experiences. “What I love about tabletop is, it’s just pen and paper,” Wragg explained. “You can house rule stuff as much as you want.” This philosophy permeates Entropy, allowing for a level of player agency rarely seen in video games.

Wragg also emphasized the importance of low-fidelity graphics in achieving this level of customization. By embracing a simpler aesthetic, his team could implement a vast array of unique weapons and status effects without being constrained by resource limitations. “I think if we were working in more high fidelity, we would have had to rein in that ambition a bit,” Wragg admitted.

This commitment to tabletop-inspired design is not just a stylistic choice; it’s a reflection of Wragg’s deep appreciation for the history of RPGs. He recounted how, during the development of Dread Delusion, he delved into the origins of digital RPGs and discovered the profound influence of tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons. “I just found myself being like, why? Why do RPGs do these things?” Wragg explained. “If you’re designing an RPG, you have to go back to the source on tabletop games because so many of the systems that exist within modern AAA RPGs, they originated with Dungeons & Dragons and all those other spin-off games and war games.”
