GTA 6 Cuts Realistic Grocery System, But Car Fueling Remains: Here’s Why

Rockstar Games continues to unveil details about the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, and this time, it’s a fascinating look at features that made the cut and those that didn’t. We’re diving into why one potentially immersive mechanic was scrapped in favor of gameplay balance, while another – car fueling – is sticking around despite potential player backlash.

The Fridge: A Feature That Didn’t Make The Cut

According to Rockstar developer Rob Nelson, speaking with Famitsu (as translated by GamesRadar), the initial vision for Jason and Lucia’s in-game lives included a grocery shopping system. Players would have been able to purchase groceries to restock their refrigerators. However, this feature was ultimately deemed too complex and potentially disruptive to the overall gameplay experience.

“At one point during development, we were experimenting with a system that would allow you to buy groceries to restock the fridge,” Nelson explained. “We had specifications for stores with groceries that you could buy and take home, and the fridge could be replenished. However, because this would have complicated the mechanics, we had to simplify it.” This decision aligns with Rockstar’s commitment to balancing realism with enjoyable gameplay.

Fueling Up: A Necessary Evil?

While players won’t need to worry about keeping their fridges stocked, they will need to refuel their vehicles.

YouTuber TGG, who had the opportunity to visit Rockstar and witness GTA VI in action, reported that players can stop at gas stations to fill up. The process is quick – approximately 10 seconds with a dedicated animation – and relatively inexpensive. Electric vehicles will require recharging instead.

TGG also mentioned that Nelson acknowledged the potential for this fueling/recharging system to be divisive among players. However, Rockstar remains committed to its inclusion, emphasizing that it encourages strategic thinking. For example, planning a getaway after a heist requires ensuring your vehicle is properly fueled or charged beforehand.

A Familiar System, But With Higher Stakes

In Grand Theft Auto V, vehicles have unlimited fuel by default. However, puncturing the gas tank results in an immediate loss of fuel and renders the car unusable. While mods for the PC version of GTA V offer more realistic refueling systems, GTA VI’s implementation promises to be a core part of the gameplay experience.

Release Details and Hype

Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game arrives with immense hype and expectations, fueled by its open-world crime setting and Rockstar’s reputation for delivering high-quality experiences. Despite the pressure, early reports suggest that preorders alone could generate an estimated $2 billion by launch, potentially covering the entire production budget.

The base edition of GTA VI retails for $80, while the Ultimate Edition, priced at $100, includes a wealth of exclusive in-game content. Get ready to hit the streets – and remember to fuel up!
