If you’re searching for your next binge-worthy obsession, look no further than Hulu’s “Furious.” This eight-episode crime thriller just wrapped its first season with a finale that cemented its place as my favorite new drama – and possibly my favorite TV show – of the year. Trust me, this one is special.
A Standout in a Year of Great Debuts
This year has already seen some fantastic TV debuts. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offered a charming buddy dynamic within the Game of Thrones universe, while Widow’s Bay became a breakout hit with its unique genre blend and stellar cast. Even “Lanterns,” despite its controversies, has been well-received. But Hulu’s “Furious” is the latest surprise that’s taken off, week after week – the finale had 90% more views than the premiere, already cracking Nielsen’s streaming charts, according to Variety. And it’s already been greenlit for a second season! “Furious” is truly something special, and people are taking notice.
A Darkly Compelling Narrative
“Furious” was created by Elizabeth Meriweather, best known for “New Girl.” While loosely based on the 40-year-old movie “Black Widows,” starring Debra Winger and Theresa Russell, don’t expect a breezy sitcom. It’s a dark, gritty drama that tackles complex themes with surprising humor. The show often presents difficult subject matter, but its masterful pacing and tone prevent it from becoming exploitative. The tension is palpable, creating an addictive quality that keeps you coming back for more.
Exceptional Performances Across the Board
What truly elevates “Furious” is its exceptional cast. Leanne Butkovic delivers a powerhouse performance as Catherine, portraying a woman grappling with trauma and unpredictability. Rossum shines as Alice, embodying a complex character capable of stoicism, cruelty, compassion, and everything in between. Quincy Tyler Bernstine steals every scene as Nora Washington, Alice’s boss and a Greek mythology enthusiast who commands attention with her concise dialogue. The male cast is equally impressive: Scoot McNairy as the exhausted good cop, Jake Lacy as the insatiable bad cop, Rob Yang as a sort-of-stupid FBI agent, Danny McCarthy as a corrupt jerk FBI ASAC, and Steve Way as the hopelessly romantic and mold-breaking comic relief.
I’m intentionally keeping the plot details vague because I believe new viewers are best served by experiencing the dark secrets of “Furious” organically. But if you’re looking for a series that will undoubtedly be in Emmy conversations next year, look no further.
