Since forging a new relationship with Hollywood, Brandon Sanderson’s weekly podcast has increasingly focused on movie and book adaptations. This week, he and his co-host Dan Wells dissected the “Project Hail Mary” film, and Sanderson makes a compelling argument for experiencing Andy Weir’s novel first.
The Science is Key
“They left out a lot of the science, the trial-and-error, the process of figuring out how everything works,” Sanderson explained. He elaborated that the moment the protagonist discovers he’s on a spaceship is significantly more drawn out in the book, creating an immersive experience where “you’re figuring it out with him, like what is this? What is going on?” While still praising the film as “a fantastic job,” Sanderson highlights the depth lost in translation from page to screen.
As someone who devoured the novel before watching the movie, I wholeheartedly agree. Movies are inherently limited in their ability to convey the intricate details and scientific exploration that make Andy Weir’s work so captivating. While a film can only hint at the science as a plot device, the book allows you to truly delve into the protagonist’s thought process and experience every discovery firsthand.
Dive Deeper with the Novel
For those who haven’t yet embarked on this literary adventure, I highly recommend it. It’s a prime example of science fiction that seamlessly integrates scientific principles into an engaging narrative. Furthermore, it’s one of my favorite audiobooks. Narrator Ray Porter delivers a superb performance with an incredibly soothing voice, and the inclusion of subtle background sounds enhances the overall listening experience. If you enjoyed the movie, transitioning to the book is a natural progression.
