Nvidia’s controversial DLSS 5, the generative AI upscaling technology that promises stunning visuals but often delivers a horrifying mess, has been making waves since its leak last week. While modders have been experimenting with it in games, the latest development takes things to a whole new level of unsettling: applying DLSS 5 to real-life video feeds.
Real-Time AI Face Filters?
Developer jpneagle has released a demo program that uses the leaked DLSS 5 technology with your webcam feed. The result? A distorted, uncanny version of yourself, riddled with digital artifacts and questionable textures.
jpneagle’s GitHub repository provides the code, although he humorously warns users to “please make sure to obtain [DLSS5 related files] ‘legally’.”
The Uncanny Valley is Real
Another user, Samuel Cardillo, showcased the same effect using OBS and ReShade. While he described it as “basically giving professional lighting,” the resulting image clearly highlights the technology’s tendency to create exaggerated features and unnatural skin tones.
Ultimately, while amusing that this works “better” on real people than in games, it’s essentially just a more complex version of existing camera filters. However, it does raise questions about the future of AI-powered image manipulation and its potential impact on everything from social media to professional photography.
Perhaps Nvidia is already exploring a partnership with Snapchat? Only time will tell.
