In a surprising move that signals a change in strategy, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has confirmed the company is scaling back its “aggressive marketing” efforts for the PlayStation 5. This shift comes as the console enters the later stages of its life cycle and highlights a renewed focus on maximizing revenue from existing users.

A New Era for PlayStation

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly six years since the PlayStation 5″>PlayStation 5 first launched in November 2020. While initial struggles with scalpers seem like a distant memory, PS5 consoles are once again proving difficult to find at major retailers, fueled by renewed interest following Rockstar’s extended look at GTA 6″>Rockstar’s recent deep dive into GTA 6 released on Netflix. This comes after the console experienced its lowest May sales”>its worst-performing May, a direct consequence of Sony’s price hikes”>the announced price increases across all PS5 models in April 2026.

During an interview”>interview with the Wall Street Journal in mid-August, CEO Hiroki Totoki explained that Sony’s primary goal is now to extract maximum revenue from its existing PlayStation Plus user base. “We are in the latter half of the life cycle for a PlayStation console,” he stated. “That means that we do not need to ‘aggressively sell’ the console today. And rather than that, we’re focusing on recurring revenue from the recurrent userbase. And already, PlayStation Plus has more than 125 million monthly active users today, and how to monetize from those users is quite important for us.”

The Digital Future: Concerns and Controversy

This strategic shift comes amidst growing anxieties surrounding Sony’s plans to eventually eliminate physical game discs starting in January 2028. Online comments are rife with calls to “bring back ‘Only on PlayStation'” and preserve the option for physical media.

The company’s recent response to a class-action lawsuit, arguing that consumers cannot reasonably claim ownership of digital games due to the nature of the digital age, has further fueled these concerns. This move solidifies fears about both the Xbox’s Project Helix”>Xbox and potentially the next generation PlayStation console being exclusively digital.
