Sony’s PlayStation Users Are Spending a LOT More, Analyst Reveals

It seems the phrase “for the players” isn’t just a meme; it might actually reflect a shift in how much users are spending on their PlayStation consoles. New data from Niko Partners reveals that Sony is pulling in significantly more revenue per active PlayStation user compared to the PS4 generation.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

According to Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners, who specializes in the Asian and MENA gaming markets, the average active PlayStation user is now spending $230 more than they were in 2018. This translates to a staggering 59% increase in revenue per user. Responding to a new interview with Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki regarding the company’s less aggressive PS5 marketing strategy, Ahmad took to X to post these eye-opening figures.

“I did the math on this and average annual revenue per PlayStation active user has grown from 23,580 Yen in FY2018 to 37,485 Yen in FY2025, which is around $230. [It’s] an increase of 59% over that period,” Ahmad explained. He added that the growth was relatively flat over the past year or two.

What’s Driving the Increase?

Ahmad attributes this surge in revenue to several factors, including the transition to higher tiers of PlayStation Plus subscriptions, increased spending on game software and downloadable content (DLC) / microtransactions (MTX), and, unsurprisingly, higher prices for hardware. Essentially, Sony is making more money from its existing user base.

This revelation offers a potential explanation for Sony’s seemingly relaxed approach to PS5 marketing. With users already spending significantly more, the pressure to aggressively push sales might be lessened, even in the face of rising console prices and increasing competition from Microsoft.

The Road Ahead: Digital-Only Future?

While the data paints a rosy picture for Sony’s current financial standing, it also raises questions about the future of gaming. Sony remains under fire from many gamers due to its upcoming policy change that will eliminate physical game discs by January 2028. Meanwhile, Microsoft is offering its Xbox players the option to digitize their disc-based Xbox games as its next-gen Project Helix console/PC hybrid device looms on the horizon.
