Actress Kat Dennings, known for her roles in “2 Broke Girls” and “WandaVision,” recently shared a hilarious and surprisingly heartwarming story about her audition process for George Miller’s critically acclaimed 2015 film, “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The experience, which involved six grueling hours with Tom Hardy, turned out to be more than just a screen test – it was an unforgettable acting class that ended with tea and conversation.

An Audition That Felt Like an Acting Class

Dennings recounted her experience on TikTok, explaining how the audition felt like “the worst day of my life” at times. She doesn’t specify which role she was vying for, but it was likely one of Immortan Joe’s Brides. The process involved a chemistry read with Tom Hardy, who ultimately took on the iconic role of Max Rockatansky.

Kat Dennings shared her “Mad Max” audition story on TikTok.

Dennings, still living at home with her parents during this period, described how director George Miller remained largely silent throughout the lengthy process. Instead, an acting coach led the session. The dialogue was reportedly just a couple of pages long and somewhat vague, leading to some unconventional exercises.

From Lines to Noises: A Unique Approach

“At one point,” Dennings explained, “they had us switch roles. They had the camera and had us like running around the corner.” The acting coach then encouraged them to deliver their lines without actually saying the words, prompting them to create noises instead. This unusual request led to some unexpected results.

“The worst part of it,” Dennings admitted, “was when the acting coach told us to say the lines without saying the lines, encouraging us to just make noises instead of the lines. I was dying.” However, Tom Hardy embraced the exercise with enthusiasm, demonstrating remarkable creativity in his vocalizations.

An Unexpected Ending: Tea With Mom

The most memorable part of the story, according to Dennings, came after the grueling six-hour audition. Unable to drive herself, she planned to call for a ride home, but Tom Hardy offered her a lift. What followed was truly unexpected.

“He drove me home,” Dennings recounted. “He was so lovely. We get to my house, which was my parents’ house, because I still lived at home with my parents. And he came inside and he met my mom, and he was like, oh, what a nice house. She was like, oh, come on in.” Tom Hardy then proceeded to have tea with Dennings’ mother, engaging in friendly conversation.

“I was like, all right, Tom, well, this is a very special day,” Dennings continued. “Uh, I hope, uh, you move further in this experience because I know that I’m not going to. I went back to the converted garage where I lived, put my pajamas on, took a nap.” Later, she returned to find Tom Hardy still there, continuing his conversation with her mother.

“So… I can’t say enough about Tom Hardy,” Dennings concluded. “I will be a fan of his for life. I think he’s a wonderful person, and my mom still talks about him.”

Beyond “Mad Max”: Dennings in the MCU

While Kat Dennings didn’t ultimately secure a role in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” she went on to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Darcy Lewis in the “Thor” films.

Meanwhile, Tom Hardy has been keeping busy. He recently dropped a rap album he collaborated on with Czarface, where he raps under the alias Frankie Pulitzer, touching on everything from Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin to Kathy Bates.
