Leaked Scream Game Build Surfaces Online: A Glimpse into a Horror Title That Never Was

The recent Steam leak has unearthed more than just forgotten titles; it’s revealed a playable build of an unreleased Scream game, offering a fascinating look at a horror title that never saw the light of day. This discovery is a treasure trove for gaming history buffs and fans of the iconic slasher franchise.

A Ghost of Horror Past

Last week’s massive Steam was hit with a massive leak”>Steam leak exposed years worth of files, including builds from 2003-2013. While many are simply curiosities, the playable Scream game is a genuine surprise. Kotaku”>Kotaku highlighted X/Twitter user roly poly reaper’s posts showcasing gameplay footage of this previously unknown title.

The gameplay appears strikingly similar to Dead by Daylight. One player takes on the role of Ghostface, relentlessly hunting down ordinary players attempting to gather evidence against the killer. Developed by Fatshark, this Scream game would have predated both Dead by Daylight and the Friday the 13th game, making it a surprisingly forward-thinking concept for its time.

While the exact development period remains unclear, it’s likely this build originates around the release of Scream 4 in 2011. The franchise had been dormant for a decade prior to that film, suggesting Paramount Games was actively seeking ways to revitalize the brand. Although we won’t experience the finished product, some dedicated fans have managed to get multiplayer functionality working within the leaked build.

This unearthed Scream game is more than just a relic; it represents a missed opportunity in the asymmetrical horror genre. With the continued success of titles like Dead by Daylight, and upcoming releases such as an early access version of previews have been pretty positive so far”>Halloween: The Game, there’s arguably more room than ever for a well-executed Scream game. Perhaps Paramount Games will revisit the idea in the future.
