Get ready to sharpen your swords and polish your armor, because the highly anticipated remake of The Witcher is facing a temporary setback. While not exactly “on hold,” development has been strategically integrated with the ongoing work on The Witcher 4, according to CD Projekt Red. This means fans will have to exercise a bit more patience before Geralt’s first adventure gets that next-gen makeover.
A Strategic Pause for Enhanced Development
While the remake of the original The Witcher is not officially cancelled, it’s currently intertwined with the development of The Witcher 4. Developer Fool’s Theory, known for its work on The Witcher 3’s Songs of the Past expansion, is lending its expertise to both projects. This integration allows the team to leverage assets and tools being created for The Witcher 4 to streamline the remake process.
“Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4,” explained a CDPR representative. “As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies. As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development.”
Looking Ahead: When Can We Expect Geralt’s Return?
While this news might be disappointing to some, it ultimately points towards a more polished and refined final product. The team is clearly committed to delivering an open-world experience that honors the original while modernizing its gameplay and visuals. The Witcher remake was announced in 2022, and promises to be a significant departure from the original, with developers openly discussing plans to an open-world game and even considering remove or remake parts of the original that they feel are outdated or bad.
Given that The Witcher 4 is currently slated to arrive in 2028, and CD Projekt Red aims to complete a trilogy within six years of The Witcher 4’s debut, it’s reasonable to speculate that the remake could potentially surface sometime between The Witcher 4 and its sequel. This would allow fans to continue their adventures in the Continent while eagerly awaiting Geralt’s first foray into next-gen gaming.
Beyond The Witcher universe, CD Projekt Red is also hard at work on a new IP, codenamed Project Hadar. The studio is currently is ramping up hiring on the project while prototyping the game , suggesting that this ambitious title could be a major player in the coming years.
While we await further updates on both The Witcher remake and Project Hadar, one thing is certain: CD Projekt Red remains a powerhouse in the gaming industry, constantly pushing boundaries and delivering unforgettable experiences.
