Get ready to sleep with the lights on, folks! Ethan Hawke has dropped a chilling hint that he’s teaming up once again with director Scott Derrickson for another horror project. This news comes hot on the heels of “Black Phone 2,” and promises more scares from this powerhouse duo.
A Legacy of Nightmares
Hawke revealed to Polygon that he and Derrickson are currently “working on something right now.” This collaboration is particularly exciting given their previous successes in the horror genre.
Their first foray into terror was 2012’s “Sinister,” where Hawke played a true-crime writer who stumbles upon a disturbing mystery. Years later, they reunited for “The Black Phone,” with Hawke taking on the iconic role of the Grabber, and Derrickson returning to direct. “Black Phone 2” is slated for release in 2025, continuing the chilling narrative.
What’s Next?
During a recent interview about his upcoming film “The Weight,” a Depression-era thriller, Polygon asked Hawke about his interest in more horror movies. His response was tantalizingly vague: “Yeah, Scott and I are working on something right now. I think he’s so gifted. I like working with him.”
While details remain scarce, this announcement has horror fans buzzing with speculation. Will they revisit a familiar nightmare, or are they crafting something entirely new?
Could It Be “Black Phone 3”?
The most obvious possibility is a third installment in the “Black Phone” franchise. “Black Phone 2” resurrected Hawke’s Grabber and expanded the supernatural mythology, while also receiving positive reviews from critics. The series certainly has room to grow, especially considering the sequel hinted at the Grabber’s influence extending far beyond his original reign of terror.
However, it’s worth noting that Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill were deliberately noncommittal about a third movie when “Black Phone 2” premiered last year. In an interview with Polygon at Fantastic Fest, Derrickson stated they hadn’t even discussed “Black Phone 3,” while Cargill emphasized the need for a compelling idea to justify returning to those characters.
Or Will They Return to “Sinister”?
Another possibility is a return to the world of “Sinister.” Hawke led the original film as true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt, but didn’t reprise his role in 2015’s “Sinister 2,” which was directed by Ciarán Foy and received a less favorable reception from critics, earning just a 14% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
