Tom Regan from Kotaku got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at this new adventure and spoke with key figures involved in bringing Geralt back to life.
A Surprise Reunion

Doug Cockle, the iconic voice of Geralt, expressed his surprise at the announcement. “It completely surprised me—I had no idea CDPR had this in mind at all,” he admitted. While many fans anticipated Geralt’s absence following Ciri’s prominent role, Songs of the Past promises a return to familiar territory with a fresh perspective.
Paweł Sasko, one of the driving forces behind the expansion, explained the genesis of this unexpected comeback. “The idea for Songs of the Past actually came up quite some time ago,” he revealed. The core Witcher team, including Philip Weber, a narrative director and former quest designer on The Witcher 3, spearheaded the project. After the release of Cyberpunk 2077, a dedicated team focused on bringing this expansion to life, building upon the foundation laid by the original game.
A New Land, Familiar Vibes
The expansion takes place in Letten, located in northeastern Redania. Sasko emphasized the importance of creating a distinct identity for this new location while maintaining the familiar Witcher feel. “We looked a lot at the Polish countryside and English countryside for defining elements,” he explained, highlighting the blend of artistic inspiration that defines the expansion’s visual style. The use of pink and violet hues, combined with ray tracing technology, creates a unique aesthetic that sets it apart while remaining true to the Witcher universe.
“We have to balance making it feel fresh without straying too far from the base game,” Sasko added. “Players picking up the Complete Edition five years from now shouldn’t feel like it’s a completely different game.”
A Deeper Dive into Dandelion
The story revolves around Geralt tracking down his old friend, Dandelion. Sasko explained why Dandelion was chosen as the focal point of this adventure. “In The Witcher 3, there was a lot of focus on fatherhood and the relationship between Geralt and Ciri,” he said. “This expansion is about friendship.”
Doug Cockle added, “In the books, there are a number of stories involving Dandelion where we see a very serious side of him… That’s part of what makes Geralt and Dandelion such a great team as friends and companions.”
Sasko elaborated on Dandelion’s role: “Dandelion creates an interesting counterbalance. He penetrates that shell from time to time, which allows us to characterize Geralt.”
Modernizing the Gameplay
One of the biggest criticisms leveled at The Witcher 3 was its gameplay. Sasko acknowledged this and explained how the expansion aims to address these concerns. “When you look at The Witcher 3 and the opinions of players and press, gameplay is what was criticized most,” he said. The team applied design principles learned from Cyberpunk 2077 to modernize the combat system.
“We are also adding new tools, like the iron chain,” Sasko revealed. “The chain was mentioned multiple times in the books… so I’m glad we can finally bring that dynamic element into the combat.”
