In a surprising admission from a veteran of the horror genre, Hideki Kamiya, the director of the original Resident Evil 2, has confessed that he finds modern Resident Evil games to be excessively frightening. Despite his pivotal role in shaping the franchise, Kamiya admits he’s never been able to fully embrace the horror elements.

During an interview with VGC, Kamiya revealed his aversion to horror, stating that he struggles to enjoy scary movies and finds it difficult to play even the Resident Evil titles he helped create. This perspective is particularly interesting given that earlier Resident Evil games focused more on atmosphere and tension than outright terror.
The Rise of Hyper-Realism
Kamiya attributes this shift to advancements in technology, which allow developers to create incredibly realistic and disturbing monsters. “The amount of crazy, horrifying things that people are able to put on the screen is absolutely insane,” he said. He even suggested that current Resident Evil development teams might be desensitized to the level of horror they’re creating.
A Solution Inspired by Grounded
Kamiya proposes a solution inspired by Xbox’s “arachnaphobia mode” in Grounded. He jokingly stated, “I legitimately wished Resident Evil would include some kind of non-horror mode for people like me.” This idea could potentially open up the franchise to a wider audience who might be intimidated by the intense horror elements.
