In a significant victory for consumers, Sony is preparing to pay out nearly $8 million to PlayStation users as part of a settlement concerning digital game pricing on the PlayStation Store. This follows a court’s rejection of Sony’s attempt to dismiss the lawsuit, opening the door for potentially eligible customers to receive compensation.
The Case Against Sony
The lawsuit, via IGN originally filed in 2024, alleged that Sony maintained a monopoly over PlayStation Store prices by forcing publishers to relinquish control of final pricing. The plaintiffs argued that Sony effectively eliminated price competition by restricting the sale of digital download codes redeemable on the PlayStation Store.
While Sony is not agreeing to wrongdoing as part of this settlement, accepting it will allow the company to avoid a potentially lengthy and costly civil trial. If the terms are approved by the court, all claims against Sony in this specific case will be dismissed “with prejudice,” preventing future lawsuits on the same issue.
Who’s Eligible for a Payout?
If you purchased any of the affected games through the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, you may be eligible to receive compensation. The official court documents list dozens of games that fall under this category, including popular titles like Nier: Automata, Resident Evil 4, The Last of Us Remastered, and even PlayStation Vita exclusives such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary.
