Legendary game director Hideki Kamiya, known for his work on Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 2, is once again voicing his concerns about the increasingly terrifying nature of Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise. In a recent outburst, Kamiya passionately advocated for a “non-scary” mode in future installments, claiming that the developers seem oblivious to how genuinely frightening their games have become.

Kamiya’s Plea for Sanity

The call for a less-terrifying Resident Evil experience began circulating after Clovers Inc., Kamiya’s new game development studio, posted a video of their team playing Resident Evil Requiem.

In the clip, Kamiya jokingly lamented, “I’ve been saying for forever, they should make a ‘non-scary’ mode.” He echoed this sentiment on social media, proposing an alternate experience where zombies are “cute,” blood splatters transform into “cherry blossom petals,” and upbeat music replaces the usual horror score. His goal? To allow players to “purely enjoy the puzzles and battles in a fun mood.”

Kamiya doubled down on his request in an interview with Video Games Chronicle, emphasizing that he was “100% serious” and accusing Capcom of pushing the boundaries of horror too far. He stated, “Nowadays, with how photorealistic and high-fidelity video games have gotten, the amount of crazy, horrifying things that people are able to put on the screen is absolutely insane, and I think anybody who’s on the Resident Evil teams at Capcom, at this point, they must all be completely numb to how scary the thing they’re making is.”

He reiterated his desire for a less-intense experience, stating, “This is not a joke; I’m being one hundred percent serious when I say that I wish they would make it so that their games can also be enjoyed by people like me, who can’t handle scary games at all.”

A Fond Memory Marred by Fear

Kamiya expressed his disappointment in not being able to fully enjoy Resident Evil Requiem, particularly the return to Raccoon City. As the director of the original Resident Evil 2, he was eager to experience Leon Kennedy’s journey back to that iconic location. However, he found the game too frightening and couldn’t progress. He has reportedly made these requests directly to Capcom developers and producers, often receiving stunned reactions.

In a humorous aside, Kamiya even suggested a spin-off title where Leon finally gets a peaceful retirement, filled with activities like “fishing in the countryside, foraging for wild veggies, baking bread, walking the dog,” etc. Unfortunately, it appears that Capcom is unlikely to heed his suggestions, as a remake of Code Veronica, promising intense zombie combat, is slated for release next year.
