In a gaming landscape often plagued by technical hiccups, The Blood of Dawnwalker emerges as a beacon of stability and visual fidelity. After spending the last week immersed in its world, I’m genuinely impressed not only by its beauty but also by how remarkably well it runs, even when pushed to its limits.
A Smooth Experience Across Platforms
The Blood of Dawnwalker, like Star Wars Zero Company and Halo: Campaign Evolved, is built on Unreal Engine 3. However, unlike many games utilizing the engine, it’s surprisingly free of the crashes and stutters that have become all too common. While I wouldn’t recommend running it on a handheld gaming PC, its scalability is commendable.
My primary testing ground was a high-end system equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D, 32GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. Even this powerful machine struggled to maintain a consistent frame rate, averaging around 70-80 fps at 4K with the Ultra preset and DLSS set to Quality. While I yearned for higher performance, the absence of constant stuttering was a welcome surprise.
The game’s stability extended beyond my desktop rig. On my Steam Machine, connected to my TV, I managed to achieve 55-60 fps at 1440p with mostly medium settings. Even on this less powerful hardware, the lack of stuttering and crashes was remarkable.
Console Performance: A Solid Foundation
I also had the opportunity to experience The Blood of Dawnwalker on both the PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. On the PS5 Pro, the game felt like it was running at around 60 fps, while on the Xbox Series X, I observed frame rates ranging from 40-50 fps with the Performance profile and Balanced profile, respectively. While the visuals are scaled down on these consoles, the overall experience is smooth and enjoyable.
PC: The Definitive Experience
Despite its solid performance on consoles, The Blood of Dawnwalker truly shines on PC. The game’s wilderness areas are breathtakingly beautiful, and the console versions sacrifice a significant amount of detail and foliage density. For those with capable hardware, I highly recommend experiencing the game on PC to fully appreciate its visual splendor.
In a world where niche RPGs often suffer from poor optimization, The Blood of Dawnwalker stands out as an anomaly. Its stability is all the more impressive considering it runs on Unreal Engine 3, an engine that has become synonymous with performance issues in recent years. This game is a testament to what can be achieved with careful optimization and a commitment to delivering a polished experience.
