At this year’s Xbox showcase, the most delightful revelation was Vivarium, a charming slice‑of‑life title that feels like a beautifully rendered early ’90s anime.
In this evocative world, a child named Jenny lives in a tranquil rural town that exists within a deserted terrarium. As she explores the surroundings, she discovers a budding tree she hopes will flourish, while interacting with endearing anthropomorphic townsfolk. The game hints at a farming and crafting system, and perhaps even a subtle mystery waiting to be unraveled.
What truly sets Vivarium apart is its visual style. The game adopts a genuine anime aesthetic, not only in its animation but also in its presentation—dialogue appears as subtitles, and the interface is almost invisible, save for a lone clock in the upper‑right corner reminiscent of Animal Crossing. The developers have also woven in brief animated vignettes that give the impression of watching a slice‑of‑life anime about a child’s summer adventures.
Players will have to be patient, as Vivarium is slated for a 2027 release on both Xbox and PC.
