The inaugural trailer for Stellar Blade: Blood Rain dropped at Summer Game Fest on June 5, sparking a flurry of speculation—not only about the rumored GenAI involvement but also about the noticeably youthful design of the game’s new heroine, Evie.
Shift Up’s chief executive, Hyung‑tae Kim—who also helmed the original 2024 title—addressed the controversy in a recent IGN interview, insisting that Evie’s appearance is merely a backdrop to her true appeal: a “lovable character” whose depth will shine through gameplay.
Kim explained that Evie is indeed younger and smaller than her predecessor, Eve, yet she brings a fierce spirit and confronts more brutal challenges. “She’s part of an elite squad hunting down a terrorist cell that wreaks havoc across the city,” he noted, emphasizing that players will soon see her true character unfold.
Kim concluded that once players engage with the game, they will appreciate not just Evie’s looks but also her dynamic interactions, combat style, and overall charm, positioning her as a compelling addition to the Stellar Blade saga.
I’ve gone back over these comments multiple times, and they strike me as nothing more than evasive fluff. Kim’s reply fails to address Evie’s appearance—or the overtly sexualized poses showcased in the trailer—other than noting that she is “younger” and “smaller in size.”
Kim did, however, touch on the new outfits coming for Evie in Stellar Blade: Blood Rain: “It will be even more appealing…That’s all we can say.” Good lord. I hope “more appealing” doesn’t mean what I suspect it might in this context. The jiggle physics in the reveal trailer were unsettling enough, thank you very much.
