ChatGPT has become the world’s most widely used AI platform, boasting nearly a billion active users each month. Building on that success, OpenAI rolled out Codex last year—a specialized tool aimed at programmers and knowledge professionals. Since the Codex desktop app debuted in February, its usage has surged sixfold, now attracting more than five million weekly active users. While developers still dominate the user base, knowledge workers now account for roughly 20% of Codex users and are expanding at triple the pace of developers.
In a move designed to empower enterprise knowledge workers, OpenAI announced today a suite of new features for both ChatGPT and Codex. After months of speculation, the company confirmed that the full Codex experience will be integrated directly into the ChatGPT app, eliminating the need for users to switch between separate applications.
OpenAI also unveiled Agent Plugins, Sites, and annotations, tools crafted to enable non‑technical teams to harness Codex for tasks such as research, analysis, content creation, presentations, dashboards, prototypes, and internal applications.
Further expanding its ecosystem, the company introduced six new role‑specific plugins that link Codex with the applications, context, instructions, skills, and workflows used by various teams. These plugins collectively support 62 popular apps and 110 distinct skills.
The new plugins are ready to use straight out of the box, yet companies can tailor them to fit their unique processes. OpenAI is also developing role‑specific plugins for sectors such as Corporate Finance, Private Equity, Marketing Strategy, Strategy Consulting, and Legal. In the coming months, the company plans to let partners build and launch plugins directly within Codex and ChatGPT. These specialized plugins are already being rolled out in Codex across supported regions.
OpenAI today unveiled Sites, a fresh Codex capability that empowers users to craft and host interactive websites and applications. Unlike a static document or slide deck, a Site can evolve as project details shift, and it can be shared effortlessly with anyone in a workspace via a simple URL. Sites is currently available in preview for Business and Enterprise customers, and OpenAI is collaborating with partners such as Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, Webflow, and Emergent to expand the Sites ecosystem.
Finally, OpenAI is broadening the scope of Codex annotations beyond code, Markdown, and web pages. Users can now annotate documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks, selecting precise sections for targeted edits. This feature allows for fine‑tuned refinements without the need to regenerate entire files, streamlining the workflow for content creators across multiple formats.
