In a recent development, CD Projekt RED has confirmed the long-standing rumors from the past few months regarding The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Originally released in 2015, the critically acclaimed game is set to receive a new expansion titled “Songs of the Past” in 2027. The studio has revealed some details ahead of its comprehensive unveiling expected this summer.
The developers clarified that “Songs of the Past,” which also involves Fool’s Theory, will not be a DLC but an authentic expansion, distinguishing it from the free small content additions that have been added to the award-winning RPG, such as character appearances.
During the company’s investor results presentation, Songs of the Past took center stage and was the focus of most questions directed towards the company. One of these questions addressed a concern shared by many players: the estimated duration of The Witcher 3’s third major expansion.
Michał Nowakowski, CEO of CD Projekt, responded that in terms of size, “it would be somewhat close to Blood and Wine, but this is something very subjective. It depends on the play style. But the message I want to convey is that definitely we are making a large expansion.”
While Hearts of Stone is estimated to run for about 14 hours according to sites like HowLongToBeat, its sequel, Blood and Wine, pushes the envelope with nearly 30 hours of gameplay, marking it as a generous addition to the franchise. However, a definitive price tag remains undisclosed.
Nowakowski clarified a circulating rumor about the upcoming expansion: it could serve as a bridge between The Witcher 3 and a future The Witcher 4, essentially a prologue that sets the stage for Ciri’s next adventure. “First and foremost, we wanted to deliver a truly great experience for fans—a solid expansion that will delight them by bringing them back into the The Witcher 3 universe. Indirectly, it does act as a reminder of the license. In a way, it’s a prologue, though not a literal one,” he explained.
With this approach, CD Projekt aims to bring The Witcher back into the spotlight, encouraging both longtime fans and new players to revisit the game ahead of the next major release.
