Despite admitting earlier this week that Marathon didn’t reach as many players as it had hoped, Bungie is making one thing abundantly clear: the studio’s sci-fi extraction shooter is far from dead. On September 24, the developer published a lengthy blog post titled “The Future of Marathon,” laying out an ambitious roadmap that extends from the game’s upcoming Nightfall refresh through December 2026 and well into early 2027. The plan introduces a permanent PvE mode, an experimental deathmatch, a new samurai-inspired shell, a social space with a firing range, and a completely new zone — signaling a fundamental shift away from Marathon’s purely extraction-focused identity toward a broader, more varied experience.
According to Bungie, the core motivation behind the overhaul is to serve a wider spectrum of players. “Some players want a quick, lower-pressure run after work,” the studio wrote. “Some want to spend an entire night with their crew. Others want to test a build, compete directly against other players, chase a difficult challenge, or follow a strange clue deeper into the ruins of Tau Ceti IV. Marathon needs to support all of them.”
What’s Landing in December
The first major step toward this larger vision arrives in December via the Symbiosis update. That month, Bungie will add Marathon’s first true, permanent PvE mode, though the studio declined to share specifics, noting it is still “finalizing” parts of the experience. Alongside it comes an experimental deathmatch mode — a change that has resonated with the community, who have long felt the game’s excellent gunplay was overshadowed by stealth-focused extraction runs.
“This experience offers a more direct, lower-commitment way to sharpen your skills and compete without putting a full run at risk,” Bungie explained. “We’ll be watching how players engage with the experiment and using what we learn to help shape the future of competitive play in Marathon.”
December will also introduce a new shell called Bishop, which Bungie describes as “Marathon’s high-performance robot samurai.” Bishop is a fast, lethal runner built around ambushing enemies with “devastating bursts of melee damage.” A social space featuring a firing range rounds out the month, giving players a non-deadly environment to test out guns and shells and meet up with fellow runners.
Beyond the new modes, the starting zone of Perimeter is set to receive a significant visual overhaul, alongside more ways to acquire high-end loot and the studio’s biggest boss fight yet — a massive alien Tick Queen.
A March 2027 Evolution and the Return of the Pfhor
Bungie’s roadmap doesn’t stop at the end of 2026. The studio outlined plans for a March 2027 update that will bring together the game’s various components — including its original extraction mode — as part of what it calls “a much larger evolution.” Among the teased elements are a new “interconnected system” of PvE, PvP, and PvEvP modes, a redesigned onboarding experience, changes to progression and the Cradle system, more focused questlines, and a completely new zone to explore.
Perhaps most exciting of all is the promise of “new alien combatants.” While Bungie hasn’t revealed what these creatures will be, the blog made one thing clear: it isn’t a Marathon game if players aren’t shooting the franchise’s iconic Pfhor. Given that the Pfhor last appeared in the original Marathon trilogy back in the ’90s, fans are already speculating that the franchise’s famous aliens may have evolved considerably by 2027.
Looking Ahead
All of this points to a studio that, despite the game’s underwhelming launch, is determined to give Marathon a second act. The plans come at a challenging time, however — following layoffs at Sony, Bungie will need to execute this ambitious roadmap with a smaller team. Still, the developer’s commitment suggests that the difficult shooter has a future worth watching.
By this time next year, Marathon could well be offering something for every type of player, from casual runners to competitive veterans. Whether the studio can turn things around and deliver on these promises remains to be seen, but the direction is clear: Marathon is evolving, and the franchise’s most beloved sci-fi shooter is very much alive.
Marathon isn’t dead. While the game hasn’t been the runaway hit those involved likely wanted, the studio isn’t giving up on the game and has big plans for it.

For those who missed the announcement, the full details are available in Bungie’s original blog post, “The Future of Marathon,” which admits the game didn’t reach as many people as hoped. As the roadmap unfolds over the coming months, one thing is certain: the 2026’s best games isn’t dead, and its evolution is only just beginning.
